My city (apparently) selects one book each year for everyone in town, and inevitably everyone else nearby, to read at the same time. It's a pretty cool idea and it must be popular because I checked at some of my local booksellers this week for the title--Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man--and nobody had it. B&N had a million copies of The Maltese Falcon for some reason but no Thin Man. Luckily, I already have a copy in a Dashiell Hammett anthology.

Does your city do anything similar? Some kind of reading initiative to get everyone, as Denver says, "on the same page?" Would you favor something of the sort?
